As a follower of Jesus, we should be paying close attention to the music we listen to. The world defines “great music” in a different way than a follower of Jesus should define “music”. There is nothing wrong with singing as we should be singing psalms and praising the Lord all the time! However, when we listen to crude, derogatory lyrics, and messages and enjoy it as a follower of Jesus, we need to evaluate our walk and heart. We should fill our ears and heart with positive, loving, and godly messages, words of TRUTH. As we know, we find the TRUTH in God’s WORD only.
I want to encourage you if you struggle in this area. It is something that you should pray about and ask God to change and remove from your life. When we are entertaining and listening to words(lyrics) that do not speak the truth and/or have a message that CONTRADICTS the Bible, we should not be listening to it.
Lets look at what the BIBLE states:
Proverbs 4:23, NKJV, ” Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it springs the issues of life”.
Deuteronomy 6:5, NKJV, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
Romans 12:2, NKJV, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God”.
James 1:26, NKJV, ” If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless”.
Ephesians 5: 3-4, NKJV, “But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks”.
BUT Tore, I like the “beat and the artist, they do so much good for the community” OR what is wrong with lsitening to it, I do not speak like the artist”…..
Again, look through the bible and spend some time reading the above verses I provided. When we are listening to dark, worldly music, we tend to repeat and sing along. We also will naturally THINK ABOUT what the song is talking about. Please review your choices in music. It isn’t necessarily the GENRE but more so the LYRICS you are following. Review that, especially as a believer in Jesus Christ.
Finally, if you have children please also pay attention to what YOU are listening to. Pay attention to what THEY ARE listening to. Children soak up everything like a sponge.
