I am black and my husband is white. Today, we still get looks or stares! We have people that will stop and just look when we are out. No joke! It is 2022, and it feels like some people do not realize God made an array of beautiful people! At first, it surprised us because it was so blatant. Now, we just smile and realize some people may be curious, bothered, angry, or puzzled?… I do not know! ha!
The beauty behind all of this is that God is so faithful, loving, and ultimately the Creator of ALL people and things! Our marriage is built on what the Bible says not the color of our skin.
2 Corinthians 6:14 NKJV, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”
Personally, when I study this verse, it reminds me that connecting with something or someone that does NOT share the same beliefs( personal relationship with Jesus, biblical doctrine, etc.) is unequally yoked. To me, that is a bigger problem in a relationship than the race of an individual.
However, this post is not about the color of our skin. It is much more than that. See, the world may look at the colors and outward appearances of people. There are a lot of perceptions, prejudices, judgments, and assumptions BUT what if we could remove all of that and just look at the important things? My husband and I are different skin colors but when it comes to our beliefs, morals, and values we are similar.
Both my husband and I have OUR relationship with Jesus. I do not rely on him to feed me the Word and he does not rely on me to get what he needs from the Lord. This was imperative when we were dating and getting to know each other. Especially due to my past and relational struggles, (read more https://bibleandcake.com/unhealthy-relationships/). I was very sensitive to who I wanted to spend my life with. It was a requirement for BOTH of us. The color of our skin was not.
I remind myself it is not about our ethnicity but that we both love the Lord Jesus with all our hearts and that we get to raise Cupcake, Cake, and Cakepop! Marrying a man who loves the Lord is one of the best attributes to have!
Despite the reactions, we may receive, my prayer is that people can get past any judgment or prejudice in their hearts. God created all races, colors, and nationalities. Ultimately, let’s strive to know God more and invite Him into our hearts so He can work in us and make us more like His Son Jesus!
