In 2012, I decided to go to South Africa for the first time on a mission trip. It was an amazing experience so I planned to return the following year. I began praying about whether I should return to South Africa or serve in a different country for the next year. During my prayer time and reading, the Lord was making it clear that I should sign up for the Peru Mission Trip team instead of South Africa’s Team again. However, I did not want to go. I felt like I was arguing with God for some unknown reason.
I recall filling out the paperwork to attend Peru yet I was not happy at the time. I guess you may be wondering why I just did not go to South Africa again? Well, something did not feel right. I knew if I did it my way, I would be disobedient to God. As I look back, I know the Holy Spirit was leading me in the direction He wanted me to go. There was a purpose behind this. Today, I see the fruit of it all.
This is NOT “luck” or some mystical happening, or the “universe” in control. None of that exists or even makes sense! This is God allowing HIS will to be done. He had a plan. He has a plan….
So, the church had a meeting and I received all the information for the trip. I tried to get “excited” because I wanted to remember that this is not about me but about serving God. At the meeting, I was able to get acquainted with the other members. One of the members was my future husband. When I returned from serving Peru, it all started to make sense. Not only was I able to serve and grow my walk with Christ through this mission trip, but I also met my husband, a man who loves Jesus.
As I reflect on how the Lord brought my husband and me together, I cannot help but to lean on some key verses:
” As for God, His way is perfect, the Word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him. 2 Samuel 22:31 NKJV
“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.” Psalm 9:10 NKJV
” Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass.” Psalm 37:5 NKJV
I pouted. I was upset. However, through obedience and faith in the Lord, I was able to serve the country of Peru and be a part of sharing Jesus Christ. I was able to meet and marry my husband, a faithful, loving man who fears the Lord.
