It was a typical outing for me and my babies!!! Up in the morning, breakfast and out the door to get the errands completed before lunchtime. We headed to the market! I love to take them so they can browse and learn what to eat and not to eat hahaha. I also love to hear “what is that mommy, ” “are we going to eat that” with hesitant, icky facial expressions”.
We headed down the aisle with the naan bread, ice cream, and appetizers(my favorite aisle). As we approached one of the freezers, a woman loudly approached us, stating, ” oh wow, are they yours”? I was taken aback as she caught me by surprise. I smiled and said “yes they are! ” She said, “my goodness they are beautiful, where are you from”?
Now, I have been asked this question all my life at the most random times. She asked if we were American and what the children’s names were. Cupcake, who is 5.5 years old, quickly responded with his name and age. She was shocked he answered before I responded. The woman had an accent so I followed up with the question as to where she was from. She was very shocked that my children belonged to me and when Cake started counting in Spanish she was in awe and asked where did they learn this? I explained that not only are they educated at school but also at home. She responded, “They go to school?” I smiled and just said, “yes”.
We quickly ended the conversation to finish up our day. She smiled and walked away but seemed to have many more questions but unfortunately, I did not have the time to continue.
The stranger was very surprised by my answers. She was very surprised that my children spoke clearly for their age and my 3-year-old enjoys speaking two different languages. She was surprised that I was American and that these children were my children. What I mean by “surprised”- almost as if, “how is this possible”????. It was apparent by her body language, facial expressions, and at the time, appalled looks!
Encounters similar to the above remind me that my children are so wonderful and such a blessing. It reminds me of my role as a mother to them, and how the Lord is faithful. However, it also reinforces to me that at any time, despite whatever someone may say, feel, believe or express, we can be kind, and loving and educate them in a gentle way.

Indeed, whatever someone may say, feel, believe or express, we can be kind, and loving and educate them in a gentle way. I totally agree with you on this.
